About Hasmonean High School

Hasmonean High School for Boys

Hasmonean High School is a high-performing, mixed comprehensive school serving the Orthodox Jewish community of North-West London. Boys and girls are taught on separate sites in Hendon and Mill Hill respectively.

Hasmonean is the only Voluntary-Aided comprehensive secondary school in the UK that has students going on to the best yeshivas and seminaries, as well as to the most prestigious universities that this country has to offer.

Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld ztl The school was founded in 1944 by Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld zt"l, a devoted and dedicated pioneer of Jewish education in Britain. In addition to rescuing thousands of Jews from Europe during the Holocaust, Rabbi Dr Schonfeld launched the Hasmonean day school, welcoming it into the fledgling Jewish Secondary Schools Movement (JSSM). Originally situated in Golders Green, the Boys' School moved to its current home in Hendon in 1947, with the girls studying in a nearby building in Parson Street. The present Girls' School site was acquired in 1975.

Hasmonean High SchoolHasmonean gained Voluntary-Aided status in 1984. Since then, both the Boys' and Girls' Schools have continued to flourish, with some buildings benefiting from extensive renovation and modernisation in recent years.

Whilst remaining totally committed to Rabbi Dr Schonfeld's principles of 'Torah Im Derech Eretz', the school is able to offer its students a state-of-the-art education in a wide range of curriculum subjects. Students graduating from Hasmonean are fully equipped with the tools they need to live as observant Jews in the modern world, acutely aware of their communal responsibilities, proud of their religious heritage and with the support of a strong network of lifelong friends.
