Science
"My mother made me a scientist without ever intending to. Every other mother in Brooklyn would ask her child after school, "So? Did you learn anything today?" But not my mother. "Izzy," she would say, "did you ask a good question today?" That difference - asking good questions - made me become a scientist." (Isidor Isaac Rabi - Nobel Prize Laureate, 1944.)
Science is not only a core subject, but also equips individuals to understand and evaluate the world around. In an increasingly technological society, scientific skills enable them to make informed decisions and develop into responsible citizens.
Within the Science Department, we work to ensure that each individual student achieves their potential. We offer a comprehensive, stimulating and challenging curriculum carefully structured to guide and support students through the Science National Curriculum. We also aim to encourage interest in the scientific world around us that goes beyond the confines of the school.

After these topics have been covered, students are ready to take the second set of unit exams.
Years 10 & 11 (GCSE)
Additional Science GCSE
In years 10 and 11, all students will study the units below. These constitute a second, separate GCSE - Additional Science. This is assessed in a similar way to the core GCSE science. The top set(s) will complete these units early, and will then study the last three extension units.
- Unit B2 Topic 1 - Inside Living Cells
- Unit B2 Topic 2 - Divide and Develop
- Unit C2 Topic 7 - Chemical Structures
- Unit C2 Topic 8 - How Fast? How Furious? (chemical reactions)
- Unit P2 Topic 9 - As Fast as You Can! (motion and forces)
- Unit P2 Topic 10 - Roller Coasters and Relativity
- Unit B2 Topic 3 - Energy Flow
- Unit B2 Topic 4 - Interdependence (organisms)
- Unit C2 Topic 5 - Synthesis
- Unit C2 Topic 6 - In Your Element
- Unit P2 Topic 12 - Power of the Atom
- Unit P2 Topic 11 - Putting Radiation to Use.
Separate Sciences GCSE (Triple Science - Extension Papers)
- B3 Topic 1: Biotechnology
- B3 Topic 2: Behaviour In Humans And Other Animals
- C3 Topic 3: Chemical Detection
- C3 Topic 4: Chemistry Working For Us
- P3 Topic 5: Particles In Action
- P3 Topic 6: Medical Physics.
Key Stage 5 - Post 16
Post 16 Science is described under the individual subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
